Treatment Methods

Our pelvic health physiotherapists use evidence-based methods tailored to your specific needs.

Methods include:

Hands-on treatment: Pelvic floor muscle release, scar tissue mobilisation, and manual therapy of the lower back, hips, and pelvis.
Targeted tools: Biofeedback, real-time ultrasound, or internal assessment to support accurate diagnosis and progress tracking.
Active rehabilitation: Pelvic floor retraining, breathing and core coordination, and guided exercise programs for strength and function.
Education and prevention: Lifestyle and posture guidance, bladder and bowel habit education, and long-term pelvic health strategies.

Understanding Your Pelvic Floor

Your pelvic floor is a network of muscles and connective tissue forming the base of your pelvis. It stretches like a supportive hammock from the pubic bone to the tailbone, holding the bladder, uterus, and rectum in place.

These muscles don’t work in isolation; they interact with the surrounding ligaments and core muscles to maintain healthy bladder and bowel control. Over time, factors such as childbirth, ageing, surgery, or high-impact activity can affect their strength and coordination. Our physiotherapists assess all these factors to create a tailored plan that restores function and confidence in your body.

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as incontinence, pelvic pain, discomfort during intercourse, or a feeling of heaviness in the pelvic area, these may be signs that your pelvic floor muscles are not functioning optimally. Individuals who have undergone childbirth, pelvic surgery, or who have a history of lower back pain may also benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy. If you’re uncertain, booking a consultation could be the first step towards understanding your pelvic health needs.

Your initial visit will be a comprehensive session where we’ll take a detailed history of your health concerns, bladder and bowel function, sexual health, obstetric history, and assess your pelvic floor function. An internal examination is commonly performed to accurately diagnose the condition of your pelvic floor muscles. We’ll then discuss your tailored treatment plan, which includes education about your condition and how to manage symptoms.

A typical session with our pelvic floor physio Sydney team usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes. This duration allows us to thoroughly assess and treat your condition while providing time for any questions you may have. We strive to ensure that each session is used effectively to maximise your progress towards recovery.

No, you don’t need a referral from a doctor to see a pelvic health physiotherapist at Movement Laboratory. You can book an appointment directly with us. However, if you are seeking to claim the session on Medicare or through certain insurance plans like Worker’s Compensation, a doctor’s referral may be required. We suggest checking with your fund or our reception for specific details.

For your first session, it’s helpful to arrive a bit earlier to complete any necessary paperwork. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being assessed and treated. If you have any previous medical records, imaging, or reports related to your condition, please bring them along. It’s also beneficial to have a list of any questions or concerns you wish to discuss with your physiotherapist.

The number of sessions needed varies from person to person, as each individual responds differently to treatment. Some may notice improvement after just a few sessions, while others with more complex conditions may require a longer course of treatment. We’ll evaluate your progress regularly and adjust your treatment plan as necessary to ensure you’re on track to meeting your health goals.

Yes, pelvic floor physiotherapy can be extremely beneficial during pregnancy and after childbirth. It can help in managing symptoms such as incontinence, assist with pregnancy-related pelvic pain, and aid in recovery postpartum. We tailor our treatments to your specific stage of pregnancy or postnatal period to support your health and well-being during this significant time of change.

The time it takes to see results from pelvic floor physiotherapy can vary greatly depending on individual conditions and the severity of symptoms. Some clients notice improvements in a few weeks, while others may take several months to experience significant changes. We’ll monitor your progress closely and adjust your treatment plan as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.
